The Power of Music

Today in Sacrament meeting, the entire hour was a musical program about Christmas and the birth of the Savior. I was quite impressed with the ward choir that we mustered up. It made me think back to a time on my mission when I was serving in Yevpatoria, a small tourist city on the Black Sea.

I was talking to Denys and Olya Nozhnykov and they were asking question about what life was like going to BYU. I was talking to them and we started talking about what I did in school growing up. I said that I had played football, golf and baseball and sang in the choir. I said I took piano lessons and was in band in junior high, but stopped doing that (I’m kicking myself about the piano part now). But Denys said something that really struck me. He said:

‘That’s what’s so great about the church. Look at all the missionaries. They are all so rounded and so good as so many different things. They get good greats, play and instrument, sing and play sports too”.

Music is such a motivator. When you are having a bad day, what do you do? Listen to your pick me up song. What do you do before a football or basketball game? You listen to your pregame playlist that makes you feel like you could take on anything.

And then there is music that hits you to the core. My favorite Christmas album is “Noel” by Josh Groban. I don’t think it is possible to find a more talented artist than this guy anywhere in the world. And if you did, you would only find 1, maybe 2.

But sadly, this music video only has 2,600,000 views. That seems like a lot, but compared to Justin Bieber or Gangam Style, it’s practically nothing.

So, whether you are hating your life because of finals or worried that you won’t be able to make ends meet so you can buy your children what they have been asking all year for Christmas, that you’ve desperately been saving up for, or whether you are having a great day and need something to be thankful for, please give this song a listen and remember: it’ll all work out in the end. Just keep pushing on.
